General Tire Wins in San Felipe 250

General Tire’s Marc Burnett Wins Class 6 At 23rd Annual SCORE San Felipe 250

San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico – (March 18, 2009) – Marc Burnett continued his winning “Ironman” streak by storming his Boost Mobile / Monster Energy / General Tire Ford Ranger to a Class 6 - Mini Trophy Truck win in the SCORE San Felipe 250.  Just as he did in his Class-winning run at the 2008 Baja 1000, Burnett drove the entire race as the solo driver of the truck.   His winning time was 5:25:20.

“This is the second time racing SCORE in this truck – we won the SCORE Baja 1000 with this one, so we’re 2-for-2 in this truck,” he said at the finish line.  “It was a pretty flawless race – we had no flats with the General Tire Grabber competition tires.  They performed beautifully all day long.  I’m going to continue driving solo – I Iron-manned the Baja 1000 and I’m going solo every race from now on.”

“This was an incredible win.  We couldn’t be happier with Marc’s accomplishment today,” said Tony Talbert, Light Truck Product Manager, General Tire.  “Marc epitomizes the Team General spirit and grit that got him through this course Ironman-style, to come out on top.  Our hat’s off to him and his entire team for an outstanding effort!

“This win marks another step forward in General Tire’s assault on desert racing, and our Grabber competition tires came through in winning style yet again, under very difficult conditions,” Talbert added.

General Tire is again ‘unleashing the fury’ in off-road performance for 2009, in the second year running its Grabber competition tires.

Burnett is a Baja 1000 champion in the motorcycle class.  He also holds two championships for motorcycle in the Baja 500.  He took first place in Class 6 in the 2008 SCORE Tecate Baja 1000, second place in the Terrible’s 250 and third in the Parker 425.

Designed with a tough, three-ply Duragen™-reinforced body construction to stand up to the rigors of off-road conditions, the Grabber also features a newly-developed competition-specific tread compound. In addition, the Grabber name and General Tire logo are prominently featured on the sidewall in red and white letters.  The Grabber competition tires are designed in size 37x12.50R17 for class 8 and trophy truck/trick truck and 35x12.50R17 for class 1, 6, 7, 7 S, stock mini and Protruck.

General Tire also has a complete line of Grabber tires for the passenger and light truck market, including the new Grabber DOT-approved off-road tire; the Grabber HTS, which delivers the perfect synergy of comfort, durability and performance; the Grabber UHP, which sets a whole new standard in performance and ride quality for SUVs, light trucks and crossover vehicles; and Grabber AT2, designed for aggressive all-terrain traction in all weather conditions.

General Tire is part of Continental Tire North America, Inc. (www.generaltire.com).  CTNA, based in Charlotte, North Carolina, is a company of Germany-based Continental AG. With targeted annual sales of more than €26.4 billion ($40 billion US) for 2008, the Continental Corporation is one of the top automotive suppliers worldwide. As a supplier of brake systems, systems and components for the powertrain and chassis, instrumentation, infotainment solutions, vehicle electronics, tires and technical elastomers, the corporation contributes towards enhanced driving safety and protection of the global climate. General Tire to Sponsor 2009 Mint 400

General Tire Returns as Title Sponsor of the 2009 Mint 400 Desert Race

CHARLOTTE, NC – (February 6, 2009) – General Tire will return for the second year as the title sponsor of the General Tire Mint 400 Race when the classic off-road contest thunders out into the Nevada desert on March 28, 2009.

The revitalized General Tire Mint 400 will run on the grounds of the old Mint 400 with the start/finish line located in the vicinity of the fireworks stand/plaza on the Moapa Indian Reservation outside of Glendale, NV, near State Route 168 and I-15. Racers will navigate through an arduous 95-mile lap course to the finish line some 16 hours later.  Last year’s Mint 400 took place on one of the original courses south of Las Vegas in an area near Primm, and was won by Trophy Truck drivers Brian Collins of Las Vegas and Chuck Hovey of Oceanside, California.

New this year is an expanded Tech/Contingency Inspection on Friday, March 27, which will cover the entire length of the Fremont Street Experience, as well as the Fremont East Entertainment District. Presented by the Southern Nevada Off-Road Enthusiasts (SNORE), vehicles will line up for Tech/Contingency Inspection Main Street to Eighth Street under the world-renowned Fremont Street Experience Canopy.

In its original hey-day, the Tech/Contingency Inspection attracted as many as 500 cars, and huge crowds to match.  Organizers are predicting a return to those numbers with this year’s expanded event.

For 2009, race will again attract a slate of celebrity racers as it did in the original races.  Also on tap are a variety of entertainment events, including a Miss Mint 400 competition.

“General Tire is bringing the Mint 400 back to its former glory,” said Travis Roffler, director of marketing, General Tire.  “This race is a perfect showcase for our Grabber® off-road competition tires, and it’s a continuation of General Tire’s triumphant return to desert racing.”

General Tire ‘unleashed the fury’ in off-road competitive performance in 2008, scoring a multitude of wins and podium finishes in its inaugural season.

General Tire also has a complete line of Grabber tires for the passenger and light truck market, including the new Grabber DOT-approved off-road tire (launching later this year); the Grabber HTS, which delivers the perfect synergy of comfort, durability and performance; the Grabber UHP, which sets a whole new standard in performance and ride quality for SUVs, light trucks and crossover vehicles; and Grabber AT2, designed for aggressive all-terrain traction in all weather conditions.

Swansea-Cerro Gordo Trail

It was 9 am and the temperature was in the mid-90’s when we pulled off the highway at the start of the Swansea-Cerro Gordo Trail. The broad expanse of the Owens Lake lay to the south and the rugged slopes of the Inyo Mountains rose to the north.Swansea-Cerro Gordo Trailhead

Before the water wars of the early 1900’s, Owens Lake and the surrounding valley supported a thriving agriculture and mining population. As the Los Angles area grew, water was diverted from the eastern Sierra Nevada watershed and the Owens Valley to satisfy the thirsty population of the Los Angles Basin. Soon, the Owens Lake was reduced to a dry, dusty flatland. By the late 1990’s, a settlement was reached that reduced the diversion of water from the eastern Sierra Nevada and the Owens Valley. With water flows returned to the Owens River, pools of water were beginning to collect in the once dry lake. The once dry lake was now a patch-work of various colors in the morning sun.
